Joggins Fossil Institute wins National Communications Award

October 23rd, 2009

The Joggins Fossil Institute has been honoured with a Silver Leaf Award for its work in engaging stakeholders and communications. This is one of 30 national awards presented by the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) to recognize communications professionals for outstanding achievement on projects recently completed. Joggins is one of only two recipients from Atlantic Canada.

"The IABC Canada Silver Leaf Awards recognize excellence in communications and we extend sincere congratulations to the 2009 recipients," says Colleen Ryan and Claire Watson, ABC, APR, 2009 Silver Leaf Awards Co-Chairs. "Each entry is judged by experienced communicators across the country who look for high quality work that has achieved its objectives. All winning submissions go through two panels of judges ensuring the submission meets exacting standards to receive an award."

Jenna Boon, Director of the Joggins Fossil Institute said of the award: “The Joggins Fossil Cliffs were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in July 2008 for their outstanding universal value in revealing the world’s most complete fossil record of life in the Carboniferous Period.

Since then, the Joggins Fossil Institute, a registered charitable organisation, has received international acclaim and recognition for its work in presenting, protecting and communicating the Joggins Fossil Cliffs; not just to the thousands of visitors who cross the threshold of the award-winning visitor centre or explore the beach and cliffs each year but to the entire world. The work of the Institute is being used as a beacon of excellence by organisations and sites around the globe, which are benchmarking themselves against the Joggins Fossil Institute.

To be honoured with a Silver Leaf Award is further justification of the excellence of the work undertaken by the team and board of the Institute in raising awareness of the need for us to communicate the importance of our natural and cultural heritage and the eventual handing over of these to future generations. We thank the team of visionaries at MT&L for their ongoing support and creativity and the IABC for recognising our work in this way.”

The International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) recognizes excellence in organizational communications at the international, national and chapter levels. Silver Leaf Awards are Canada’s national recognition program.
